Course information

A young female horticulture student If you are wishing to follow a career in sustainable horticulture and landscaping you’ll need a range of skills including; scientific knowledge of plants, soil, pest and diseases and a wide variety of practical skills such as planting, pruning and hard landscaping, including the use of equipment such as mowers, strimmers, sprayers, tractors and even mini diggers. Our City and Guilds Level 2 course will give you all the in-depth knowledge and practical skills you need to start your career, progress on to the Level 3 Advanced Plant Science and Landscape Design Diploma and then have the option of continuing on to university study with one of our degrees at the iconic Eden Project.

The course is a full-time college course with four days in college plus work experience. Successful completion of this course will give you a City and Guilds Technical Certificate in Horticulture and help you to achieve higher English and maths grades for progression on to higher level courses.

You will learn to design whole sustainable gardens, including wildlife features, hard and soft landscaping, planting sequences and laying turf for a finished show garden. You will also learn:

Plant and soil science: An introduction into the basic botany of plants and the overview of soils and their use.

Establish and maintain plants: This unit involves ground preparation, planting, pruning, hedge cutting, plant propagation and other maintenance skills

Landscape Surfaces: A practical unit which develops skills in paving and setting out features such as hedges and garden ponds/wildlife areas.

Use and maintenance of machinery including petrol and electric mowers, leaf blowers, strimmers and tractors. The hard landscaping tasks may even require the use of mini diggers. Students will completed their PA1 spraying certificate and other competencies on this course.

Plant Propagation: This unit covers all aspects of plant propagation including seeds, cuttings and an introduction to micro propagation in our specialist micro propagation unit.

Plant Nomenclature: This will give an introduction to plant naming and identification of a range of plants, trees and shrubs.
Plant selection: Choose the correct plant for the correct place – know what to plant where depending on location, soil type, and proximity to wind and the coast.

Entry requirements for external applicants and school leavers
• Three or more GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, or successful completion of a relevant Level 1 qualification.

Entry requirements for existing learners with the Cornwall College Group
• Successful completion of previous course and, where relevant, progress in maths and/or English.

Level 2 courses require 5 GCSEs at grade 3 to 4 including GCSEs in English and maths with a grade 3 in one and a grade 4 in the other.

As part of your course you will be required to carry out 150 hours of work experience in a related industry.

Level 2 Progression is on to our Level 3 Advanced Plant Science and Landscape Design Diploma, Level 2 Apprenticeships or employment.
