Course information

This one-year course will give you the basic knowledge and skills needed to work as an Animal Nursing Assistant in a veterinary practice. It is excellent preparation for our Level 3 Veterinary Nursing Diploma.

During the course you will learn the practical skills and the underpinning knowledge for all aspects of work in an assisting role within a veterinary practice, including animal handling and care of in-patients such as feeding and exercising. It will also include client interaction and administrative duties.

If you are between 16 and 18-years-old you will be attending the college one day a week, unless you need to study maths or English GCSEs, when you will be required to attend an extra day a week.

You will need a two days a week voluntary placement in a veterinary practice, making three days in all for your study programme.

If you are 19 and over, you would be required to attend the college one day a week and a veterinary placement a minimum of one day a week.

During this one-year course you will learn the practical skills and the underpinning knowledge for all aspects of work in an assisting role within a veterinary practice including animal handling and care, assisting with care and administrative duties in the veterinary environment. You will also undertake at least one day a week industry placement in a veterinary practice.

Entry requirements for external applicants and school leavers
• Three or more GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, or successful completion of a relevant Level 1 qualification.

Entry requirements for existing learners with the Cornwall College Group
• Successful completion of previous course and, where relevant, progress in maths and/or English.

One GCSE at grade 4 or above in either English or maths and a further three GCSEs at grade 3 or above.

A work experience placement of 1 - 2 days per week in a veterinary practice is also necessary before interview.

As part of your course, you will be required to carry out Industry Placement.

Continue your studies with our Veterinary Nursing Diploma Level 3 or go into employment. This course is a helpful step into a career as a veterinary nurse.
