Course information

Develop your engineering knowledge and skills relating to horticultural machinery, ranging from mowers to ride on mowers and tractors. The course includes servicing and maintenance of machinery, shaping and assembling equipment, performing joining and cutting of materials as well as how to service and repair cooling systems, engines, gearboxes, braking systems, hydraulics and electrics, plus much more.

You will develop engineering skills and knowledge to prepare you for employment or progression on to level 3 courses or apprenticeships.

You will learn the workshop skills to repair and maintain a full range of equipment from strimmers and lawn mowers to soil preparation equipment and tractors. You will learn about safe working practices and how to be employable in today’s fast-moving engineering market. Practically you will be able to repair transmissions, braking systems, steering systems, tyres and tracks on land-based equipment as well as engines, gear boxes and hydraulic systems.

You will develop good working practices and profession personal performance.

Entry requirements for external applicants and school leavers
• Three or more GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, or successful completion of a relevant Level 1 qualification.

Entry requirements for existing learners with the Cornwall College Group
• Successful completion of previous course and, where relevant, progress in maths and/or English.

You will need to have Grade 3s or above in 5 GCSEs including English and maths.

You will be assessed through a series of practical assessments.

This course is designed for you to progress on to full time level 3 horticultural/agricultural engineering or apprenticeships.
