Duchy students lead Callington’s Poppy Appeal
Students and veteran staff at Duchy College Stoke Climsland, part of The Cornwall College Group (TCCG), have been chosen by the Royal British Legion to lead this year’s Poppy Appeal in Callington.
Military and Protective Services (MaPS) learners from the Stoke Climsland campus have been distributing poppies and collection tins throughout the region, in preparation for Remembrance Sunday, on 12th November 2023.
The group of enthusiastic students are eager to continue this tradition and can be seen at the Royal British Legion stand in Callington’s Tesco.
Jon Stone, study programme manager for MaPs at Duchy College Stoke Climsland, expressed his enthusiasm for “such a fantastic opportunity for the learners,”
“It’s a chance for them to feel part of the Armed Forces community and to honour those who have served. They are really proud to be taking on this key role and hope to raise more money through the annual Poppy Run,” continued Jon.
Duchy College MaPS has a rich history of supporting the Charity, having raised more than £10,000 through their “Poppy Run” over the past three years.
This year’s event, taking place on Friday 10th November, will see students of all abilities run, yomp or speed-march as many mile loops of the College as they can, over a two-hour period.
Poppy Aldington, 17 from Callington, who is studying Entry to Uniformed Services NCFE diploma, commented: “I think this is brilliant and great that the Royal British Legion thought of us and want us to be involved. We are all hoping to have a career in the Services and it makes us feel even more connected to the Services.”
Venetia Summers, head of campus, echoed her enthusiasm and stated: “As a College, we are incredibly proud to be entrusted with coordinating this year’s Poppy Appeal in the Callington area. It shines light on the dedication and community spirit our staff and students exhibit daily.”
