Course information

Land Based Engineering Level 2 Courses If you love science, technology, engineering, or information technology, then a career in land-based engineering could be for you. The skills and types of land-based engineering include diagnostics repair and testing, all in the context of diesel and petrol engines, equipment controlled by GPS technology and integrated into environmental information – a fantastic mix of innovation and problem solving. It’s not all about farming either, everything concerned with the upkeep and control of the countryside, forestry, sports grounds and open spaces involves the application of engineering solutions.

We offer both full-time and apprenticeship routes for school leavers. Once you have completed the Level 3 qualification you will be able to work all over the world in a range of careers maintaining and repairing land-based machinery and technology.

Modern agriculture is amazing and if you look more closely you will see things that will truly impress you. No longer is this an industry caught in a technological backwater. The career opportunities are fantastic and those colleges, training providers and universities involved will tell you that the job opportunities are excellent with many more jobs than there are people to fill them.

This intermediate qualification is equivalent to five GCSEs and is an ideal starting point to learn the basics for a career in
land-based engineering.

What our learners say:

Tom Tamblyn – Agricultural Engineer Level 2 2020/21 - `I have really enjoyed the course this year, the practical work has linked to the theory making it both engaging and useful. The variation of equipment we use helps us build a good foundation for what we want to go and do next year. Being in an industry work placement helps us to gather real experience to re inforce what`s being learnt at college`

Lewis, 16, wants to be an agricultural engineer and completed his work experience at Alan Snows Agricultural Engineers. “I thoroughly enjoyed my work experience with Alan Snows and fitted in really well with all of the other engineers who were all really friendly and very knowledgeable. I took away a lot of new skills and learnt a lot of new information. Duchy College’s course and work experience programme has provided the tools of skill, experience, knowledge and confidence that I need to pursue my chosen career as an agricultural engineer”

Formal practical and written exams under examination conditions

As of September 2024 learners that start the Land-based Engineering full time qualification, and wish to progress to our apprenticeship provision, will do so at our centre of excellence for Land-Based Engineering Apprenticeships at Bicton for September 2025.
