Course information

Plant operations is the broad term referring to the operation and driving of heavy plant equipment such as, excavators, dumpers, rollers and telescopic handlers to name a few. Groundworks is the specific job role of preparing the ground using some of these machines within a construction, civil engineering, roads, railways or landscaping project.

In order to work on a construction site you will need to gain your Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) certification. On top of that you will gain tickets to prove you are skilled and experienced in operating and maintaining a wide range of specialist large plant machinery. To work in the industry you will need to achieve the Level 2 qualification.

On this Level 2 course, you will learn how to operate a variety of equipment including excavators, forklifts, dumpers and road rollers.

You will learn how to operate a variety of equipment including excavators, forklifts, dumpers and road rollers and you could gain a CITB CPCS ticket for one of the items you train on.

Entry requirements for external applicants and school leavers
• Three or more GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, or successful completion of a relevant Level 1 qualification.

Entry requirements for existing learners with the Cornwall College Group
• Successful completion of previous course and, where relevant, progress in maths and/or English.

A 4 in Math must be achieved and a minimum of a 3 in English.

As part of your course you will be required to carry out Work Experience and/or an Industry Placement

You will be assessed through a series of practical activities such as:

Preparing and using a forward tipping dumper
Preparing ground and using an excavator to move earth
Compacting ground using a ride on roller
Operating telehandlers to load lorries

As of September 2024, learners that start the Construction driver training full time qualification. This will help them in gaining full time employment or in to an apprenticeship with in the industry.
