Course information
The British Horse Society Changing Lives Through Horses is an alternative education programme where young people can learn in a safe and nurturing environment alongside highly trained coaches. Horses and equine facilitated learning can have a remarkable role to play in impacting on a young person’s life.
The main aim of the programme is to develop and support 6 key life skills: Communication, Confidence, Teamwork, Building Relationships, Perseverance, and Responsibility. This will be achieved through practical horse care and handling and recognized with structured awards and certificates. Activities contained in each award provide opportunities for the participant to develop in the six key life skills that are transferable back to school or further education opportunities, practice learning skills linked to their school curriculum and build a portfolio of equine knowledge and experience that could lead to a pathway of further industry qualifications. Before I came here I was really badly behaved, I would be sitting in the toilets & not going to lessons at school. I got suspended & the school thought this course would be good for me. After the first day at Duchy I was in school every day & going to my lessons because I knew I had something to look forward to at the end of the week. I haven’t got a behaviour point since I started Changing Lives Through Horses
