Animal Care and Welfare Manager Apprenticeship Standard
Animal care and welfare managers work in a wide range of settings within the animal care sector and may typically be employed by animal charities, pet care services, pet retailers, entertainment and education.
This course not only covers the day to day practical care, welfare and behaviour requirements of animals, but also ensures that candidates can learn how to manage animal collections and the day to day running of businesses. They will be able to comply with UK legislation and plan and resource events in a professional, safe and responsible way. The course supports students who want to gain supervisory and mentoring skills and prepares them for working in the animal management industry.
What you will learn
The course covers the care of animals in accordance with appropriate legislation, regulations and organisational policies.
You will further learn about animal behaviour, social needs in captivity and how to care for animals at different life stages. You will learn how to plan bespoke and sustainable accommodation for animals, develop feeding and health care plans and keep up to date with advances in the animal care industry. You will also learn about the skills required to supervise working teams, manage difficult conversations and mentor colleagues. In addition you will be able to plan events, compete risk assessments and maintain biosecurity in an animal setting.
Entry requirements
Candidates will need to have GCSE Grade 4 or above in both English and maths (or recognised equivalent qualifications). It is also recommended that candidates have 3 other GCSEs at grade 4 or above or another relevant Level 2 qualification.
Assessment
Candidates must complete a portfolio of evidence, including written assignments and practical assessments.
Once the portfolio is complete the candidate will complete an End Point Assessment (EPA), which consists of a workplace practical assessment and questions, followed by a professional discussion.
Progression
Progression is on to Higher Education, Higher Level apprenticeships or employment.
