Course information

Foundation learning students gaining practical skills and experience The FL Independence Pathway develops your independence and pre-vocational skills that will support your transition to adulthood.

On this pathway you will work towards individual personal targets linked to different areas of independence and vocation, which may include:

Vocational learning linked to land-based activities;

Learning to travel by bus or train;
Independent living at home, e.g. basic home cooking skills or keeping the home clean and tidy;
Independent living in the community, which may include learning to go shopping or going to a restaurant;
Personal development, such as learning to keep safe and the importance of staying healthy.

We will work with you, your parents and carers in designing your programme of study, setting your targets and assessing progress inside and outside of College.

Our vision is to support you to be INDEPENDENT, CONFIDENT AND RESILIENT so that you are well-prepared to engage with the wider community. The Personal Progress Towards Independence course is a great way to develop in all of these areas.

At Duchy Stoke Climsland why not try out agriculture, animal care, equine studies or horticulture as part of your independence skills?

There are no formal entry requirements, however to access this course you will need to have evidence of additional learning needs such as an EHC Plan.

Assessment will be ongoing throughout the academic year and could be practical, written or oral so that you can build your portfolio. Many of our assessments are available ‘on demand’ and you will be prepared by specialist teachers for these in order to support your achievement.

Many of your assessments will also link directly in to your Education Health Care Plan outcomes and targets

Once you have completed this pathway you may wish to progress on to other pathways within Foundation Learning such as FL Works or FL Skills. If you leave College, you will leave with skills that will enable you to be more independent at home or in the community.
