Course information

Agriculture is one of the oldest professions and arguably the most important industry in the world. Agriculture provides the growing global population with food, materials for clothing and even biofuels to keep machinery running. Modern agriculture is an industry with highly-mechanised processes, employment in this sector goes beyond farm workers and managers to engineers, consultants and scientists.

This is a full-time course for anyone who wants a broad introduction to the agricultural industry. Throughout the course you will develop skills and knowledge in a range of farming disciplines and technologies.

You can expect to develop a wide range of skills across the range of farm enterprises. You are also required to complete 150 hours of work experience as a core element of your study programme, providing invaluable exposure to the industry.

You will have access to the farm at Duchy College Rosewarne and Home Farm at Duchy College Stoke Climsland, as well as local industries which incorporate dairy herds, and other livestock production as well as crops production.

You will learn a wide range of farming skills, allowing you to gain a deeper understanding of how the farm really works as well as safe and effective working, animal production, crop husbandry, agronomy and soil health, the use of machinery, as well as plant and animal physiology. You will be learning sustainable agricultural practice. You will be managing an area of land at Rosewarne as part of crop production in a rotation plan and showing rare breeds.

Entry requirements for external applicants and school leavers
• Three or more GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, or successful completion of a relevant Level 1 qualification.

Entry requirements for existing learners with the Cornwall College Group
• Successful completion of previous course and, where relevant, progress in maths and/or English.

English or Math at grade 4 and the other at grade 3, plus 3 other GCSEs at grade 3 or above.

You are required to complete 150 hours of work experience as a core element of your study programme, providing invaluable exposure to the industry.

You will be assessed by in year coursework and practical assessments as well as end of year externally set exams and a synoptic assessment.

Progression routes include Level 3 Livestock apprenticeship, Level 3 Crops Technician Apprenticeship, Level 3 T-Level in Agriculture or employment. Careers in this industry include:
