Student Stars in Supported Internship Video
A student from Duchy College, has recently featured in a promotional video by Access Cornwall that highlights his achievements in the Supported Internship programme.
Glynn Bance from the Stoke Climsland campus has been excelling as a food and beverages assistant at The Barn Café, located at the National Trust property at Cotehele, with tremendous support from the College and the café staff.
Glynn’s role at The Barn Café includes a variety of responsibilities, from washing up and using the dishwasher to assisting in food preparation and serving customers. He said: “I enjoy working here because it’s very nice and helps out the National Trust a lot. I help prepare the food for Mary in the kitchen, and I help take the food out to customers.”
Glynn has received outstanding praise from both the café staff and college support staff for his commitment and work ethic.
Richard Kendrick-Crawshaw, Restaurant Manager at The Barn Café, expressed his admiration: “Glynn is a very polite young man, always on time, which is amazing. He listens and is always willing to learn.”
The Supported Internship programme at Duchy College is designed to provide students with additional needs, specifically those aged 16 to 24 who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), the opportunity to gain meaningful work experience, develop vital skills and build confidence for future employment.
While the programme is primarily aimed at EHCP learners, the College also offers internships to non-EHCP learners to ensure broader access to valuable work experience opportunities.
Employment Coordinator for Progression Pathways at Duchy College, Lucy Maiklem, emphasized the importance of providing these opportunities: “It’s fantastic to see students, like Glynn, thrive and enjoy working at the heart of the community. We’re incredibly proud of Glynn’s achievements. He’s a real inspiration to anyone who is looking for employment and how to find the right support for you.”
The promotional video created by Access Cornwall brings Glynn’s journey to life, demonstrating the significant benefits of the Supported Internship programme and encouraging other students and employers to explore similar opportunities.
The video can be found on The Cornwall College Group YouTube.
