BHS Stages 1 & 2 Care & Lunge Training
Run by a BHS accredited coach, this course is suitable for those working towards Stage exams or looking to develop their equine knowledge for their own enjoyment. This is a practical course on which you will develop knowledge and understanding of horse care and management required for the BHS stages 1 and 2 including tuition on lungeing.
What you will learn
The course will cover some of the elements below from the BHS Stage 1 care & stage 2 care & lunge sections and can be adapted to the needs of the group.
• Know about the responsibilities of working on the stable yard
• Be able to maintain a clean stable
• Be able to carry out routine grooming tasks
• Be able to describe horses and know about horse behaviour and health
• Be able to use rugs appropriately
• Be able to tack up and un-tack
• Be able to handle a horse
• Be able to feed and water a horse
• Know about the roles, rights and responsibilities of an Assistant Groom
• Be able to fit tack and boots on a horse
• Be able to prepare a horse to travel
• Know about horse behaviour
• Understand how to feed horses
• Know about basic horse anatomy
• Understand horse fitness
• Be able to maintain a horse’s health
• Be able to prepare a horse for presentation
• Understand how to care for a horse’s feet
• Understand the environment for keeping horses
• Lunge a horse for exercise
Entry requirements
You will need to wear sensible yard clothing with appropriate yard footwear.
For safety reasons we ask that no jewellery, apart from a watch and wedding ring, is worn. Piercings will all need to be removed and not taped. In addition, hoodies are not permitted on the Equestrian Centre.

Assessment
No assessment is included in this course. The course tutor will be able to advise you on booking BHS exams if you choose to do so and sign off skills records.
