Land-Based Studies City & Guilds Diploma

If you love everything to do with agriculture and have your sights set on working within the agriculture industry, then this is the course for you and will be your first step in your career.

The first thing you’ll notice about this course is that it’s about practical learning – you’ll be spending a lot of time on the college farm, learning by doing as you work on a range of tasks with the livestock, machinery, crops and farm estate.

Our working farm features 260 head dairy herd, 200 ewes, and a small number of pigs, whose piglets we rear and sell through a local butcher. We are also in the process of building the Future Farm. There really has never been a more exciting time to be part of agriculture at Duchy.

You’ll be working with all the livestock on the farm: cattle, sheep and pigs. You’ll be performing tasks that help to maintain their accommodation, health treatments and selection for breeding and for sale. You will be developing all of the essential skills you need to assist with the care of animals. You will also gain an understanding of wildlife and conservation in the local area. Alongside this, you will assist with a range of estate maintenance tasks, like fencing and maintenance of structures. You will also be driving our tractors and making use of our tractor driving area, as well as on the farm.

As a Level 1 course, this diploma is all about introducing you to the agriculture industry and developing your essential skills. You’ll be learning from experienced professionals, who are there to give you the very best start to your career.

What you will learn

This one-year introduction to agriculture will introduce you to the essentials of working within the agriculture industry, you will learn how different enterprises, livestock, crops and estates work and how they interact with one another and with the countryside.
