Course information
Run by a BHS accredited coach, this course is suitable for those working towards Stage exams or looking to develop their deeper equine knowledge for their own enjoyment. This is a practical course on which you will develop knowledge and understanding of horse care and management required for the BHS stages 2 and 3 including tuition on lungeing.
• Know about the roles, rights and responsibilities of a Groom
• Be able to fit tack and boots on a horse
• Be able to prepare a horse to travel
• Know about horse behaviour
• Understand how to feed horses
• Know about basic horse anatomy
• Understand horse fitness
• Be able to maintain a horse’s health
• Be able to prepare a horse for presentation
• Understand how to care for a horse’s feet
• Understand the environment for keeping horses
• Lunge a horse for exercise
• Be able to use equipment for flatwork and jumping
• Be able to use studs
• Understand the use of bits
• Understand the nutritional requirements of a horse
• Understand how to improve a horse’s fitness
• Understand horse anatomy and physiology
• Be able to manage the health of a horse
• Understand undesirable horse behaviour
• Understand how to manage a turnout area
• Be able to assess a horse’s conformation
For safety reasons we ask that no jewellery, apart from a watch and wedding ring, is worn. Piercings will all need to be removed and not taped. In addition, hoodies are not permitted on the Equestrian Centre.
