An Introduction to University Study Skills
This is an immersive 6-hour course designed to enhance your academic skills and set the tone for an effective learning journey.
The course is aimed at anyone who is looking to engage in further learning within the digital landscape.Those considering progression or return to formal education will gain insight into the skill requirements of higher education today. Those looking for career progression will find the course useful in preparing for further learning within advanced professional development pathways.

What you will learn
The content will be covered through a mix of lectures setting out novel learning strategies, discussion of personal learning experience and exercises implementing strategies. This will allow the student to take stock of their existing skills and set targets for further learning within academic or industry context.
Time management:
- Setting goals and priorities (setting SMART goals)
- Creating schedules (use of digital planners)
- Avoiding procrastination
- Stress management (self-care strategies in the academic context)
- Study habits and self-regulation
- Academic advise and support services
Research skills and digital literacy:
- Library resources (open source and pay-wall)
- Effective use of online resources (incl. online learning platforms)
- Evaluating academic and industry sources
- Citing sources
- Avoiding plagiarism in the digital age
- Cybersecurity and privacy awareness
Reading and writing strategies:
- Critical reading and annotation
- Summarising information
- Note-Taking techniques
- Active listening
- Essay structures
- Editing and proofreading strategies
- Test taking strategies
Critical reflection on learning:
- Reflect on previous learning experiences
- Consider if learning strategies require adjustment
- Identify the areas for improvement and growth
